For more than 10 years, DJ Skee has been an integral touchstone to Hip-Hop culture. A native of Minnesota, Skee and his SkeeTV platform have been deeply responsible for the careers of Game, Freddie Gibbs, and Skeme, among others.
Once a top mixtape DJ, Skee has expanded into production, his website and video series (casting over 1 billion views, collectively), and a brand ambassador for companies ranging from Google to AT&T. After a decade on satellite radio, care of Sirius XM, today Skee announced his resignation.
Including the fact that he’s been among the first national and international DJs to play artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, and his Black Wall Street homie Game, Skee points that six corporations own almost all of radio, which he says limits the potential, the playlists, and the creativity as a result. Calling radio “the original social network,” Skee also reflects on his experience growing up, hearing new artists, true culture, and a powerful conversation.
Being “brutally honest,” Skee also states that he feels radio needs a new guard to save it, and alludes that he’s extending his own capacities within the system. The veteran West Coast personality does not formally state what is next for him, but seemingly signifies that he’s remaining in the industry.
