For more than 30 years, Scarface has recorded some of the most compelling Hip-Hop music in the genre. In 2018, Brad Jordan is passing on what he’s learned and teaching some tricks of the music trade to students at Houston, Texas’ Jack Yates High School.
There, the multi-platinum member of the Geto Boys and Facemob will guest-instruct classes on what takes place behind the scenes in the industry. “We’ll learn how to produce, we’ll learn how to write, we’ll learn how to engineer, we will learn how to make videos,” Scarface told students during a recent visit to the school cafeteria, as reported by The Houston Chronicle. “We will learn how to put our music on a platform for sale, and you will be paid for the music if you sell any records.” ‘Face told listeners that his storied career began when he was still in high school. Around this period, as “DJ Akshen,” Scarface would join Willie D, Bushwick Bill, and DJ Ready Red in Rap-A-Lot Records’ Geto Boys. The legendary lyricist will return to Jack Yates this fall as a guest lecturer.
Like many schools across the country, including Dr. Dre’s Compton alma mater (thanks to a $10 million donation), Jack Yates is in the process of adding a recording studio. The new studios align with growing interests from teens in recording, engineering, editing, and other facets of modern music-making.
Scarface joins an expanding list of MCs who have made educating part of their repertoire. For years, ‘Face’s longtime friend and collaborator Bun B has taught at Texas’ Rice University. 9th Wonder has been a lecturer on staff at a host of universities, including his current classes at Duke. Skillz, and now Murs are among artists in residence at University Of Richmond and Duke, respectively.
