An Iraqi doctoral student is questioning his family’s decision to return to Wichita, Kan., after they were arrested while depositing a check at a bank Wednesday.
Sattar Ali, who is originally from Iraq and moved to the United States in 1993, said he was trying to deposit a $151,000 check at an Emprise Bank when police showed up and arrested Ali, his wife and their 15-year-old daughter, The Sunflower reported.
The check came from the sale of the family’s Dearborn, Mich., home, ABC-affiliate KAKE reported.
He had recently moved back to Wichita to obtain his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering at Wichita State University, where his 18-year-old son is also a student.
