PUBLISHED BY AMANDA MESTER •AUGUST 17, 2017

E-40’s 1995 sophomore solo LP In A Major Way might be remembered most for “Sprinkle Me” (featuring fellow The Click member Suga-T), but lesser-known single “Dusted ‘N’ Disgusted” also stands the test of time. Featuring Tupac – who dropped Me Against the World the very same week, that March – Mac Mall, and Spice 1, it was a record about loyalty to one’s own, regardless of the dirt they may have done. In A Major Way and Me Against The World would go platinum, likely the source of great mutual admiration between the two friends. They had long since been down, thanks to Shakur’s 1988 move to Marin City, California, just a few miles from 40’s native Vallejo.

Heads may recall that ‘Pac is noticeably missing from the “Dusted” music video, in a way replaced by Sick Wid It Records’ own Celly Cel. Sporting a “Free 2Pac” T-shirt, Cel was showing love for a friend locked up. At the time, Shakur was jailed for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, a crime for which he steadfastly proclaimed innocence. In many ways, Pac’s absence from the video and his friends’ deliberate decision to include him anyway elevated the song’s message even higher (as 40 raps, “Some cold-hearted sh*t / Back to f*ckin’ work, one of the homies just got dusted / What y’all wanna do, what y’all wanna do? / Cold-hearted b*tches…“).

Thirty years ago, Stacy Peralta, Tony Hawk, and the rest of the Bones Brigade released a gonzo skating video that was part marketing stunt, part experimental art project, and part guerrilla-filmmaking treatise. The film interspersed improvised sketches with some of the most beautiful skating the world had ever seen. Here, the original Bones Brigade members tell the story of the grainy VHS movie that changed skating forever, The Search for Animal Chin.

Building the Brigade:

Stacy Peralta (Bones Brigade founder, ‘Animal Chin’ filmmaker): I had a dream of creating the world's greatest skateboard team, a team that was composed of truly gifted athletes. And what was really important was holding the team together over a long period of time so the members could develop and create something meaningful and lasting.

Alan “Ollie” Gelfand (Bones Brigade member, 1978–81, inventor of the ollie trick): There were a hundred people in the Bones Brigade over the years, but there's only a handful who stuck out.

Kevin Harris (Bones Brigade member, 1982-present): By '83 or '84, skating really started creating its own identity. More magazines were coming out, people were getting behind Tony Hawk and guys like that. It was a world of new tricks and new superstars in the industry, and it created a bunch of rock stars in the end. It was the dream team to be on—the same team as Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, and Tony Hawk. When I got asked by Stacy Peralta to ride for the Bones Brigade, it was a life-changing turn.

Lance Mountain (Bones Brigade member, 1983–91): Our group was just young enough, on the cusp, where we didn't have to go and get jobs. And we were going, “How can we figure this out to make this a living? 'Cause we don't want to give this up.”

Presidio Terrace is considered the most prestigious street in the city with 38 mansions on it. The average cost of a property on the street is $5.1 million — and it now belongs to San Jose residents Tina Lam and Michael Cheng.

The street had been put up for auction because the homeowners’ association had failed to pay the annual $14 county property tax for 30 years. Why? Because the tax bills were sent to an accountant’s address they haven’t used since the 1980s.

Ironically, only white people were allowed to purchase property in the area until 1948. The Virtual Museum of San Francisco quoted an ad for Presidio Terrace in 1906:

“Baldwin & Howell advertisement pointed out that Japanese and Chinese had invaded the Western Addition, and residence districts were being ruined. They offered for sale lots in Presidio Terrace with restrictions against Orientals. The ad read, ‘There is only one spot in San Francisco where only Caucasians are permitted to buy or lease real estate or where they may reside. That place is Presidio Terrace.'”

The question comes up whenever someone meets Reece Whitley for the first time. Whitley is too polite to respond with the classic teenage show of disdain: the eye roll. But inside? Inside, his eyeballs are on the other side of their sockets.

“How big are your shoes? I hear that all the time,’’ Whitley said with an exasperated chuckle. “I mean, I’m a swimmer. I don’t wear shoes. It’s not a relevant question.’’

What remains relevant, however, is Whitley’s skin color. He would love for it to be otherwise, for the notion of an African American swimmer to be a norm instead of a novelty. The sport simply isn’t there yet. Elite-level swimming success for blacks in the United States essentially begins with Cullen Jones and ends with Simone Manuel, and that stretch started in 2008.

It all started when a man walking along the beach stumbled upon a tiny octopus that was gasping air and struggling to survive.

From the looks of things, it's likely that the eight-legged creature had been hanging out in shallow water on the sandy beach, then was abandoned there when the tide rolled back out. The octopus became stuck in the sand until the man took notice and decided to help.

Recognizing that the octopus was clinging to life, the man took a clean plastic cup, filled it with water and gently scooped up the stranded octopus. Then he went into shallow water and tenderly scooched the octopus out of the cup and back into the ocean so as not to cause it any harm.
